Monday blahs or maybe just sick of the
news
I'm feeling weary and ineloquent today, so am just going to give you
some good links to follow.
First of all, reader John from Manitoba has posted several informative
links on the comments page
regarding Harper's blanket support for Israel, and about the "Homeland
Security Campus". Haven't heard of the latter, or of "Repress U"
?
You'd better read it, then.
In case
you didn't notice, at Blog2 there's a photo
report of the Ottawa and Montreal actions calling for an end
to the siege of Gaza.
Also, please check
out the activities that will be taking place where you live during
ISRAELI APARTHEID WEEK.
The
Finkelstein site has posted a first hand account of the Jan. 26
Gaza convoy: Excerpt: "The
last speaker was this teenager from Sderot, it was her first rally
ever, and she talked about how she and her family suffer from the
Quassams, but also how she also always remembers how much deeper and
worse the suffering is in Gaza."
There's a bunch of verbiage out there today on what to
do with Canada's aboriginals, mostly trying to
reform them and not our policies. Then there's the usual
yadda yadda about how they need good
housing and clean drinking water and more
money spent on education
(haven't we heard that a zillion times before without any change
resulting?). This is all in response to the Stats Canada report that
the Native population is growing faster than the non-Native. The Windsor
Star hits the nail on the head with this closing comment: "
... the poverty and opportunity gap between first nations and the rest
of Canada shames us all. "
The McGill Daily
does a good job of denouncing the Manley report as
"empty posturing" and the mainstream media's coverage as
"uncritical". Here are a couple of brief excerpts:
"Some
may think Canada is fighting so Afghan boys can fly kites and women go
without burqas. Others think we’re doing our part in the “war against
terror.” But the deployment of massive amounts of violence in foreign
countries, against the will of their people, has only generated massive
increases in global terrorism."
" ... there
is not
a great deal of difference between the Karzai regime – whose membership
includes drug lords and war lords who rule with a Constitution informed
by Sharia law – and the Taliban."
The regime in
Kabul
appears to be growing tired of the western countries assuming that
everything they do for Afghanistan is good and right. Britain
just
assumed it could send in any old envoy it wanted to without bothering
to consult Karzai. Are
their faces red!
Meanwhile,
in Lebanon, we see an example of western influenced "democracy" and its
method of dealing with political opposition: Reuters:
