Recidivist in the making?
CanWest:
Black says going to prison is no disgrace
This is hilarious since almost every media item about him these days
starts out "The disgraced ... Conrad Black". Either the man's a
hopeless incorrigible or his upper lip is a tad overly stiff.
Still a privileged lord in his own fantasy, he's even ordering his
prison work program à la carte - he prefers to do "something
bookish"
like teaching French to his inferiors - rather than anything on the
prison's standard job list. But, of course! Mustn't soil one's
patties, n'est ce pas?
I wonder how many imprisoned drug dealers want to learn French.
How
many Americans, period, want to learn French? Doesn't the worldly
wise
Black know that France has been nose-thumbed in the US as being "old"
Europe, not to be taken seriously, living in the dark ages, simply
because it
didn't jump at the chance to support the Iraq war. (CNN)
Maybe he meant to say drink French. Given his true
druthers, I
wonder which Black would most prefer to have shipped to him - books or
French wine? Will he go into withdrawal, or will he resort to
brewing
his own hoosegow hootch? He can probably teach those inmates a
few
things besides French.
(By the way - read that CNN article a bit further and see what
current presidential candidate John McCain said about the attack on
Iraq. Yet another indication of poor judgment?)
Speaking of booze: there's suddenly a British
movement against middle-aged women imbibing it, and one of the
tactis is to appeal to their vanity. Yesterday the Daily Mail had a
different article
along with some photos describing how drinking a couple of glasses of
wine every day exaggerates the effects of aging. The images were
so
fake it cracked me up. In the first the model was smiling and the
lighting was soft and from the sidet; in the second one she was
frowning - which of course makes the face sag - and the lighting was
harsh and from above so as to cause deep shadows in the facial lines.
If you clicked on the link you know by now that the article with the
scary photos has been withdrawn. But some enterprising aggregator saved
the photos. Here
they are - you gotta love the internet. But you also gotta hate
what
the "authorities" try to get away with, and how the media aids and
abets the charade.
It appears to be more about justifying higher
tax revenue from alcohol than a serious attempt to educate the
public on the dangers of any kind of substance abuse.
But when the Queen - whose job it is to provide Brits with a model for
exemplary behaviour - bestows a peerage on the likes of Conrad Black,
who now claims to have sought solace
in God but actually found it in fine French wine (Guardian)
... well, whucha gonna do?
Serious stuff:
Colombia
is using Israeli tactics to get something going.
WashTimes:
South America on brink of war?
"The obsessive conduct of those who prize the military
option
sharpens the armed conflict with grave possible consequences" read a
statement from Venezuela's Foreign Ministry
Malalai
Joya continues to speak out about Afghanistan.
Rabble:
Canada should change its policy on Afghanistan.
Canada
should not continue its current policy until 2011. Canada should act
independently of the United States and find an alternative policy if
they really want to be an honest friend of the Afghan people and
improve this catastrophic situation.
