A bag full of tricks
Mostly dirty ones

Schreiber denied extradition appeal - but will hang around anyway
YYC:
Yes, we need him for a public inquiry.

Reader letter to the Toronto Star:
"...Mr M should be compelled to surrender these
taxpayer dollars [$2.1-million settlement] into escrow pending a final resolution of the issue and should only be returned to him upon absolute and unequivocal exoneration by the courts or a public enquiry..."
YYC:
Excellent point made - Mulroney didn't "win" his law suit, the Liberals settled ...

Three items From The Harper Index:
1) Mission vs. war – How Afghanistan conflict is framed
Canada's military involvement has been marketed as a noble cause, with help from Hillier, Horton's and hockey.
YYC:  Time to boycott Horton's and hockey!  There should have been delegations leafletting outside Tim Horton's across Canada from the moment it set up business in Afghanistan to make the troops feel at home.  Marching around in the streets occasionally is not going to stop this war.

A frequent presence outside the shops, just as we have been doing with the Chapters boycott, would go a long way in showing the seriousness of the anti-war intent.

2) Religious Right, a major part of Harper's coalition, surfaces over film censorship Charles McVety's clout over Telefilm illustrates rising influence of Canada's "Theo-Cons".
YYC:
Not that Canada hasn't been censoring stuff we don't know about for a long time, but Chuckie McVety is a good example of why religion and state had to be separated in the first place.  A lot of these so-called Christian leaders have very dirty minds, and their tendency to want to stamp out things they don't like is very revealing of their own mind processes.  Remember when Falwell saw homosexuality in Tele-Tubbies?

3) Cadman affair dramatically changes election timing scenarios March 17 by-elections likely to go ahead, and Liberals could bring down government this spring if Conservatives sink in polls.
YYC:
But first both sides have to check the polls they deny being influenced by.  Each hopes to win a majority; talk about high hopes!  Unfortunately, the have pretty much formed a coalition anyway.

TorStar: Crackdown on smokers harmless, McGuinty says
Premier plans to ban smoking in cars carrying children, denies it's a first step toward curbing other rights

YYC:  Of course it's not a first step.  It's one in a long line of curbs.  How about the seat belt laws, for instance?  How about the helmet laws?  When will we be fined for not wearing hats in winter?  When will obese people be fined for being a hazard to their own health?

Education is the key as always, but when the politicians see a chance to increase revenue, and at the same test how far they can push the population, education is last on the list.

Canwest: Government to ask for clemency for Canadian in Saudi Arabia It had been common practice for Canada to lobby foreign governments when a Canadian faced the death penalty. But when put under pressure to seek clemency for Alberta-born Ronald Smith, who is on death row in Montana for committing a double murder, the government revealed in October it would no longer seek clemency for Canadians on death row in the U.S. or in other democracies where there has been "a fair trial."
YYC:
If Canwest hadn't raised the issue of Ronald Smith, I would have.  This shows not so much a concern about capital punishment but a racist and ideological bias regarding who is carrying it out and how.  If Canada is against capital punishment, it should be seeking the return home of all of its citizens on death row - period!

GAZA:

BBC: Egypt hosts Gaza ceasefire talks
The groups have indicated that, in return, Israel would have to stop all attacks on Gaza and lift its blockade.

Why this wasn't a requirement of the so-called "peace" talks is beyond me.

Israel says the crisis in Gaza is a fabrication, and says the Palestinians are bringing Israel's murderous attacks on themselves.  It's the chicken and egg question that's so common in a culture of war, and in kindergarten sandboxes.  Who started what?

See CNN Video where Care worker describes the true situation of Israel's longtime neglect of basic services for which it has been responsible due to the occupation.

Thanks to Carolle, Click here for a whole new batch of links related to the situation in Gaza.
