The oldest profession(s)
Hawkers and hookers and their cognitive
disconnects
How in control of their own thought processes are the people paid to
screw with our minds? Not very, it seems. Take a look at this
statement from the guy who is heading up the the "$4 million
Israel rebranding project" (TorStar) that's being
test-run in Toronto:
"There's
a lot of confusion about branding," said Aharoni. "People hear it and
they think of advertising campaigns and PR. But it's mainly it's an
attempt to change the mindset of people when it comes to Israel ...
That's like
saying, it's not about PR it's about PR.
Public
Relations : the business of inducing the public to have understanding
for and goodwill toward a person, firm, or institution; also : the
degree of understanding and goodwill achieved (Merriam-Webster)
Thanks again to Carolle,
we have another collection of Palestine news items
from a wide variety of sources which paint the very picture the Israel
branding campaign is trying to obscure.
And since we're
talking about prostitution:
DailyRecord:
Eliot Spitzer Scandal Hooker Ashley Dupre Set To Make $5million
Well, good
for her. And she will still claim she's "all about music"(Her
MySpace page).
Kudos also to the
Macon Music baseball team (SOSanDiego)
that saw its chance to finally get some media attention by building its
whole season opener theme around Spitzer. But remember, it's all
about
the American obsession - sex ... er, I mean, baseball.
Pity Americans who seem to value the almighty buck above ethical or
even logical considerations. They can't all achieve the dream of
becoming president someday so there must be compensations.
There are signs that all may turn out well for Spitzer himself:
Newsday:
Investigators split on charging Spitzer with crimes
From the point of view of leniency, some investigators argue that the
loss of the governorship and the humiliation that goes with his
downfall might be sufficient punishment ...
Spitzer, of course, does still have a shot at becoming
president someday.
But
if he were Black or a commie (AFP) ...
Apparently,
Arab News is proposing an
Israeli angle to Spitzer's downfall, but that website is a slow
loader at the best of times and right now, no doubt because of the
heavier traffic, it's impossible to reach, and the article must remain
a mystery for the time being.
(Update: Arab News Link okay
now. Read it and wonder)
Israel can't be blamed for Spitzer's marital infidelity, though. Dr. Laura
says it's the wife's fault (MSNBC). When we get our
derisive laughter under control, maybe we should think about asking
Israel to do something about Dr. Laura.
Another media whore, the Natural Compost, has an item today headlined: This
isn't about Facebook
No, no, it's about the dire consequences of engineering students not
obeying instructions to the letter. But is it really?
It makes a good pretense, building to a crescendo of fears about
falling bridges, non-flushing toilets, and computer crashes.
But what's the job of a newspaper? First and foremost to sell.
What do
they see as the usurper of their profits? The Internet. So
why would
the Post be defending Facebook?
They're not. Look at the last line. The true thrust of an article
is
always revealed at the end. Not only is Facebook characterized as
"mysterious", it is also "soul-corrupting". Bingo.
It's not about Facebook like the Israel brand is not about spin.
