Easter Sunday Smorgasbord
A sermon in every byte
Political
spin, religious spin, not a whole lot of difference
ChronHerald:
Stay out of Mexico, Casey urges constituents
Independent MP Bill Casey says he’ll warn his constituents to stay out
of Mexico unless Canadian Brenda Martin is released from a women’s
prison near Guadalajara.
YYC: He's urging his constituents to
write to the Mexican ambassador. You don't need to be a constit
to do
it. While you're at it you could write to the two Steves, Harper
and
Dion, and ask them why we are partnered with a state that doesn't have
a fair judicial system. Didn't their mothers warn them about getting
into bad company?
Didn't Jesus say something about being unequally yolked? I mean,
yoked. I know I wore out the Easter puns, metaphors and analogies
yesterday.
ShortNews:
Jews Angry with Pope
Pope
Benedict has upset
the Jews by approving a Good Friday prayer that calls for the "saving
of Israel", which the Jews say is a reference to converting them to
Christianity.
YYC:
Ah, it wouldn't be a religious holiday without a
kerfuffle of some sort among those who deem themselves closest to the
ear of God. It's a rite, I guess. An automatic response
like when the
minister reads a line and the congregation reads the next line.
Here's my knee-jerk response: We should have a day when all gentile
women get upset over the
(male) Jewish prayer: "Thank you God for not making me a Gentile, a
woman or a slave."
Not that this matters to me, but the Pope
also decided not to do his traditional job of carrying the cross (ABCNet)
in the Easter procession because it was raining. Think how
history
might have been altered if Jesus had thought to say, "It's raining.
Let's wait for better weather."
But then, Jesus didn't have the dead ghost of Bin Laden breathing down
his neck, and
the Pope does. I mean, Mother Nature AND the bogieman?
Give the old guy a break, eh?
And also give him some points for proving beyond all doubt that he has
nothing against Islam. He has done so by allowing
a Muslim to become a Catholic.
A prominent Muslim, mind you. Not just any old run-of-the-mill
Muslim. One who will set a good Christian example of supporting
Israeli war crimes.
From the Toronto
Star:
Industry
Canada has taken a 30-day extension to review the controversial sale of
the Canadian-built Radarsat satellite and Canadarm to a U.S. arms-maker.
Shareholders
overwhelmingly approved the proposed sale to ATK, which is involved in
making munitions, mines and booster rockets.
YYC: Since
this is Sunday and a Christian holiday, I think I can be forgiven for
quoting Jesus' words: "Ye
cannot serve God and mammon." I shouldn't have to tell the
Harper government that.
From
the Associated Press:
Vice
President Dick Cheney says a Mideast peace agreement will require
"painful concessions" by Israelis and Palestinians.
YYC:
Skip to the bottom of the page to find out whose concessions are
expected to be the most excruciating:
"The
United States will never pressure Israel to take steps that threaten
its security."Oh, the sins that are covered by the word "security".
All the chapel
going and hymn singing in the world can't cleanse the stains on
Cheney's soul.
Theological Spin:
From
News.com.au:
Good
thief captures the Easter message
YYC: Did you
know
that only one gospel (Luke) backs up the traditional myth that one of
two thieves ? In Matthew, both thieves joined the rabble rousers
who
were shouting at Jesus to prove he was the Son of God by saving
himself. In Mark and John the thieves were silent. But the
selective
memory of Christianity, even those who claim to believe the whole Bible
as the literal word of God, retains only the story that makes the
crucifixion all worth while.
Political Spin:
Musharraf says his nine years of military rule were his way of bringing
democracy to Pakistan. (VOA)
Not so funny:
Pakistan's "coalition" is made up of fierce rivals. Musharraf's
comedown will be followed by fireworks.
