People Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien thinks
he's better than
Plus what's beneath Tibet,
the clanging of
Western pots against Chinese kettles, the skinny on John McCain's two
faces, and the shocking premises on which Americans base their votes
Nova
Scotia MLA Ernie Fage stepped down after being charged with leaving
the scene of an accident and BC
Solicitor General John Les, being investigated for allegedly
profiting from a land deal while mayor of Chilliwack, has resigned his
position.
And since Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien is such close pals with the
Conservatives, let us not forget all
those members of the Mulroney government who got themselves
embroiled in a variety of scandals.
What's most notable about all of them is that they acknowledged the
wisdom and tradition of stepping down until their cases were
resolved.
Scary Larry flouts both wisdom and tradition by stubbornly
clinging to the top seat in City Hall.
His trial date on charges of influence peddling is not until April 9,
2009, so we have more than a full year ahead of a tainted city
administration. And council is too - what? - let's hope not
beholden
in some way - to oppose O'Brien's presence in chambers.
The average Ottawan, of course, won't object to his presence until it
affects their pocketbooks. Oops, it just did. After
campaigning on a
zero percent increase O'Brien's council just
upped property taxes by 4.9%.
Was the publicized recommended increase of 7.7% just a ploy to make
taxpayers feel better about 4.9%? If it was, it didn't
work. Finally
we're hearing some howling against O'Brien. In fact one
Ottawa Citizen commenter has recommended an organized taxpayer's revolt.
The
CBC has a long list of other cost increases in store for Ottawans,
but only a partial list of where the taxpayer's dollar is being
spent. Ottawan Perry Marleau
gives a more complete picture of council's handouts for non-essentials
that doesn't include the cost of "Support
our Troops" decals on each and every City vehicle, which council
estimated would
cost about $15,000. but which most certainly would have been a
conservative estimate.
Marleau later had this to say about council's attitude
toward finances in general:
For
years they have looked for an easy way out when it comes to balancing
the budget. The only care they have is to spend their way into getting
elected every election.
Oh, and they
were happy to accept their 35% pay increases the minute O'Brien
took office and reversed yet another of his election campaign positions.

Beneath Tibet -
In an item entitled "News or dramatic effect?"
I included a section on Tibet entitled "Behind the Tibetan
Protest".
But holy moly! Here's an article that talks about what's beneath
Tibet: The
Tibet Card (Global Research)
Amidst its huge amount of food for thought is an explanation of why
China wants to hang onto Tibet and why the US - along with Israel - is
so eager to meddle.
Western cast iron pot says to Chinese
kettle - "Hey, you're black" -
Big bad China is also
being accused of blocking the internet, while Bell
Canada is "throttling" peer to peer file exchanges, and all the
so-called "free world" is working
hard to find ways to take full control of cyberspace - you
know, to protect us.
Here's a novel method of repression: a whole new disease has been
discovered: Compulsive
e-mailing and text messaging could soon become classified as an
official brain illness. If handled expertly this could
conceivably require enforced treatment with a whole new range of
pharmaceuticals.
It must rot their socks that China and Korea were the first to see
internet addiction as a problem. And
big pharm must be kicking itself for missing the boat
back when the telephone rang all day and women and teenagers were said
to be
the longest and chattiest users. Where was Ma Bell then when she
could
have helped millions? Oh, right, she was raking in millions.
You gotta read this -
It's an eye-opener on US presidential candidate John McCain
PressTV:
Load up on guns and bring your friends
Once
upon a time there was a country named America which was founded on
repressing and murdering its original inhabitants and on the ideas of
equality and freedom from injustice.
After eight years
of
Bush, though, it's hard to believe that Americans "have no desire for a
bad comedian to govern their country". Perhaps it's an
unconscious
desire? Check out this
YouTube video to see on what they base their voting decisions.
