Nothing is sacred
if it can be used for war propaganda ...
but Purim even?
Granted, this description of
purim
comes right out and says "Nothing is sacred on Purim". But isn't
Purim
itself somewhat sacred? Aren't the things made fun of on Purim
all
related to Jewish religious traditions and basic human foibles?
And isn't there a difference between making harmless fun of something
and making something
horrendous beyond all imagining into fun - so that small children will
aspire to it?
Not so in the mind of a local rabbi:
Canwest:
Jewish chaplain creates Purim 'military adventure' Children get chance to run
obstacle course with soldiers, try on army gear -- including tactical
vests and gas masks.
The good rabbi
has
conscience enough to have expected some flak for this, but apparently
he got none. Why? Where were the war protesters who turned
out
against the military air shows? Did this sneak up on them
unawares, or
were they worried about being branded anti-Semitic?
Well, Mr. Harper,
here's a tip for you. If you want to quell the war protest and
ensure
a new generation of fighters, just put a line of rabbis out in front of
you.
Yes, I'm shocked and yes I'm disgusted. And yes, right now I
dislike
organized religion more than ever. If there's such a thing as
evil,
this is it.
