May Day! Trouble in mind! *
When is that sun gonna shine in our back
door?
1) Funny stuff on the road to Iran; 2)
Oprah, Obama and American racism; 3) Burma democracy
1) On the road to Iran
Raid
on Taliban House in Kabul Kills 7 (WashPost)
Fighters Were Suspected of Links to Attack on Afghan President
YYC: You'd almost think they didn't want anyone
left alive to tell the tale.
Hamid
Karzai was warned of coming attack: Intel (CTV)
But the White House said it was unfair to criticize Afghan security
forces because insurgents had been able to stage an attack.
YYC: In other words, Karzai "knew", same as Bush "knew". In
more other words, there was no danger to either of them.
Only the Globe and Mail is reporting this: Canada
reaches out to Taliban. After years of refusing to
negotiate with insurgents, soldiers in Kandahar put word out they want
to talk.
YYC: After 6-1/2 years and billions of dollars
spent in
slaughter and destruction, they are going to do what anti-war
protesters have been telling them to do since the beginning?
There's
more to this saintliness than meets the eye. The answer may be
contained in the the news item below. The focus is turning more
and
more to Iran.
Iran
tops US list of terror sponsors (The Age)
IRAN is named as the world's "most active" state sponsor of terrorism
in the latest US Government survey of global terrorist activity, which
also warns that al-Qaeda is planning further attacks from a haven
in northern Pakistan. (Underlining mine)
YYC: Remember when the invasion of Afghanistan was all about the
fact
that it harboured terrorists such as Bin Laden? It only became a
war
to "liberate" Afghans when the finding Bin Laden story was no longer
believable. Pakistan is now allegedly harbouring "Al Qaeda" yet
Pakistan is not being invaded. Instead, Iran is being blamed for
what
allegedly goes on in Pakistan - and it you read that underlined part as
I do, it looks as if some sort of "terrorist" pretext is in the works
to justify an attack on Iran.
2) Racism alive and well in the land of
liberty
The
Trouble With Transcending Race (Root)
"The support of white women made Oprah her billions.
While she
has every right to vote and campaign for whomever she wants, she
stabbed all women in the back. She used her clout against the first
viable white woman. Hope she sinks into oblivion. I will never forget."
YYC: I'm no Oprah fan. I gag on daytime TV
because it's
just one big, cloying soap opera. But plenty of Americans were
her
fans until she got "uppity" and dared to support a Black
candidate.
Mind you, if she or anybody else is supporting Obama just because he is
a Black Christian then she and they are as prejudiced as the next
person.
America
has a long way to go to get past its slavery days, and even
though John McCain is slated to be the next president, it's good this
has come out. People need to look closely at how little progress
has
been made in matters of bigotry.
What's really bizarre about all of this is that you're not likely ever
hear either Oprah or Obama denounce Israel for its Apartheid practices,
because their religion teaches that it's okay for Israel to be brutally
racist against Arabs because God promised his "chosen people" the whole
of Palestine.
3) And you thought Burma's junta
was undemocratic
M&C:
Myanmar heads for "discipline-flourishing" referendum
The new charter also enshrines the right of Myanmar's future president,
a non-elected post that is likely to be claimed by the
commander-in-chief, to seize executive and legislative powers in case
of an emergency. 'A military coup could be implemented in Burma
by
constitutional means' ...
YYC: Congratulations to the Burma junta on creating extraordinary
powers for their president just like the US admin did. That's a big
step toward North American style "democracy"!
