OTTAWA - Human Rights Day, December 10, 2005

Protest on Parliament Hill against Secret Trials in Canada and on behalf of Christian Peacemaker Teams members held captive in Iraq.

STOP SECRET TRIALS IN CANADA !  -  ABOLISH SECURITY CERTIFICATES - NO DEPORTATION TO TORTURE - LET THEM GO, OR GIVE THEM FAIR TRIALS!
This was the scene as people began to gather on the Hill.

Jessica Squires, organizer, at microphone: Christian Legeais, media relations person for the Justice for Mohamed Harkat Committee, at far right.  The man in the blue and black jacket at far left is none other than Abdullah Amalki who had just finished addressing the crowd as I arrived.

I also missed Sophie Harkat's speech, but here she is below in the black jacket next to the leftmost member of the men in the orange suits ...

and here she is later with Mr. Amalki and
Halima from CAIRCAN ...
(earlier reported in error as Mr. Amalki's wife)

and again amongst supporters of Mohamed Harkat that included a number of election candidates.

The photos were great as usual, and the narative very clear. I liked the message from Tina. She's got your number, for sure. Astounding comment from Mahoney's man; not to have a personal opinion on a wildly political law, after so many years, indicates a vapid mind. Good candidate for parliament? hmmm

R.

YYC:
Thanks, Rosalie.  You've got Mahoney's number, for sure.

Thanks so much for coming yesterday. Just looked at your photo report and it is great. The picture of the judge's head is really good ! Just one thing...the woman next to Almaki is Halima from CAIRCAN and not his wife. :-) His wife was home with their  ** 5 ** children !!!

Take care and enjoy your day !
Love you lots.
Sophie

YYC:
Thanks, Sophie.  One of these days I'm going to learn to follow my own instincts, because I had some doubt about that being his wife.  Glad you liked the photos.

Yes, the organizers and attendees do deserve congratulations.  This was a very short notice event, but it had a wonderful character.

You are wonderful! I was at the Dec. 10th rally today (yesterday, now), and although I missed seeing you there, you took some pictures of the event and were very swift about posting them, too. Then, that led me to your website - it's so great, I love it! So, I just wanted to thank you for your activism and for your contributions to pressuring our government to build more ethical policy (as well as to get rid of those policies/laws that are unethical).

Take good care,

Hopefully, I'll get to meet you at another event!

YYC:
Thanks for writing, Tina, and for your comments.  I will look forward to meeting you.

Well done Corinne, and thank you for being the eyes of those of us who can't get there. And now what can we do but hope for ALL victims of injustice.

alma

YYC:
Thanks, Alma.  Like the song says, we must "Get up!  Stand up! Don't give up the fight!"
