OTTAWA - Human Rights Day, December 10, 2005 Protest on Parliament Hill against Secret Trials in Canada and on behalf of Christian Peacemaker Teams members held captive in Iraq. STOP SECRET TRIALS IN CANADA ! - ABOLISH SECURITY CERTIFICATES - NO DEPORTATION TO TORTURE - LET THEM GO, OR GIVE THEM FAIR TRIALS! THE MARCH TO THE CAMPAIGN OFFICE OF LIBERAL CANDIDATE FOR OTTAWA CENTRE, RICHARD MAHONEY ![]() Robert Marois (left) and Francine Dumas (right) carry the lead banner ![]() Our friendly police escort followed by the Music Wagon driven by Len Bush. I wish you had heard the music we marched to - I'm an old lady so don't ask me what type it was - some rap, I suppose, and something that sounded sometimes African and sometimes vaguely Middle Eastern, but all very upbeat and catchy. The lyrics of one song rippled through the marchers - "Get up! Stand up! Stand up for your rights! Get up! Stand up! Don't give up the fight!" (By Bob Marley) We need more music like this because it caught the attention of bystanders, and they wanted to know what we were all about, which made the distribution of pamphlets much easier. ![]() Heading down Bank Street ![]() Left onto McLeod Street, and... wow, doesn't Mahoney's office look welcoming? ![]() "Oh, if only you'd phoned ahead", said Mahoney's campaign manager, "Mr. Mahoney has gone to a meeting with the Defence Minister." Ah, but our organizers had of course called ahead. ![]() We worked on our chilblains while a small delegation went in and delivered all the printed material Mahoney would ever need if he were to seriously try to understand the travesty of the Security Certificate. The word from his campaign manager is that he hasn't formed a personal opinion on it. Must be nice to have that luxury. yayacanada.com Main Page - "Abolish the Security Certificate" |
