Grade 6 school speech given in Ottawa Canada by Nahedh, aged 11.

I also have a dream ...
It is indeed troublesome that war can easily be stopped -  it just never occurred to enough people. Not enough people stop to think, "hey, this sucks! Let's just sign a treaty and go home".

image: rifle transformed into fruit treeHello fellow students and teacher. I'm here today to talk about what might be one of the worst problems ever to be struck upon mankind, or rather, mankind has upon himself. What I am here about is not the smoky pollution of global warming, the unfair amount of poverty, or the unjust stereotypes of racism. All the above might be equally troublesome, but my subject is war.

Throughout my family's experiences and my own, I have learnt that war is completely pointless.  Whether we are talking about the caveman's sticks and stones or the machine guns and nuclear missiles of today, weapons of treachery are continuously being supported, made and paid for.

Shockingly, I've met people who enjoy war, who think it would be a laugh to be in a war. I think differently though as right now war is spreading across three Arabic counties and of one of them is my homeland, where right now as I speak, my very brave grandparents live, not to fight, but to stay until hopefully peace returns to the once beautiful land of Palestine.

It is indeed troublesome that war can easily be stopped -  it just never occurred to enough people. Not enough people stop to think, "hey, this sucks! Let's just sign a treaty and go home". I mean, think about it. If war and hate goes on around the world, then there might be a world war three.

The last war was ended by a nuclear bomb, and now more are being spread out. I wouldn't like to see what the next world war would do to human existence.

Like Terry Fox, Mohandas Gandhi, and Martin Luther King, I also have a dream. I dream that all wars will be put to an end. I dream there will be no more weapons in existence. I dream that people will be able to live easier lives and sleep better at night.

I dream of world Peace and now its your turn to take a stand.  Take a stand like the people who inspired me, like the organizations who create peace such as APAC, NCCAR, and websites like yayacanada.  Like my grandparents who did something I'll never be brave enough to do, or my mom who works as a volunteer peace activist, or all the adults and children who got lost in treacherous wars  that took years to stop .

Hopefully some day, mankind will not have to learn from their own pain and suffering.
