Tell Ottawa Mayor Larry O'Brien to step down
Sample letters and email addresses

Reuters: Ottawa mayor charged with bribery, says could quit

YYC: What kind of man is this who is slapped with extremely serious criminal charges and doesn't immediately show respect for the office and the taxpayers by removing himself?  One who has lower standards of moral character and action, that's who.

He claims to want to hear from the public - so Ottawans, tell him to get to lost - now - with a copy to all council members and to the media.

Those in other provinces who watch the goings-on in Ottawa should feel free to write as well.  This case has connections to the federal government.

Subject: Larry O'Brien Should Step Aside Until Legal Process Concluded

Had the evidence against Larry O'Brien resulted in charges under the Municipal Act (which was an option) he would have been obliged to step aside from his mayoralty duties until the legal process was concluded.  The expectation from Municipal jurisdiction to vacate the mayor's chair under the current circumstances should apply even though Mayor O'Brien has been charged under the more serious Criminal Code.

It should also be remembered that the saga of Larry O'Brien as a municipal politician began with the unprecedented and highly inappropriate interference of the federal minority government in the person of Cabinet Minister John Baird in the municipal politics of Ottawa---and most disturbingly interference DURING the most recent municipal election.

This city council has been operating under two shadows--that of impending charges against Larry O'Brien plus over 200 Million dollars in lawsuits arising from the original federal interference.

City Councillors have the opportunity to encourage Mr. O'Brien to remove one shadow from their work.  You should do it.

Subject: O'Brien needs to step down immediately

Mayor Larry O'Brien should be strongly encouraged to step down.  The charges against him are extremely serious and if the man had any integrity he would have immediately removed himself as a sign of respect for the office, if not for the taxpayers.

In view of the fact that Mr. Kilrea passed a polygraph, and that there are numerous other witnesses as well, Councillors should not accept any rationalizations from O'Brien regarding his continued presence at City Hall.

To do so would be to minimize the gravity of the charges against him, and cause one to suspect the overall moral character of the current Council in general.
